IT’S TIME TO DON YOUR POPPIES!

Representatives from the Royal British Legion recently visited Citynet’s office for a collection and brief discussions. It was a proud moment to engage with individuals serving in the armed forces, dedicating their lives to protect the nation. In various ways, we’ve all contributed to show our appreciation and respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in safeguarding our country and its people.

Lloyd’s of London annually hosts a Remembrance Ceremony, and this year’s event is scheduled for Friday, November 10th, where they will ring the Lutine Bell.

For those unfamiliar with the Remembrance Day event, let’s address some common questions:

What does Remembrance Day represent?

Each year, Remembrance Sunday offers a national opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice of those who defended our freedoms and upheld our way of life. We remember the Armed Forces and their families, both from Britain and the Commonwealth, along with the vital role played by emergency services and those who have lost their lives due to conflict or terrorism. From people wearing poppies to moments of silence in remembrance, there are various aspects associated with this special occasion.

When is Remembrance Day?

Each year, the country expresses gratitude and respect for those who lost their lives in wars worldwide on Remembrance Sunday. This day coincides with the actual date of the World War I armistice, which occurred at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. Therefore, Remembrance Day will be observed on Saturday, November 11 this year.

When do people start wearing poppies?

Many individuals begin wearing their poppies on October 31, 11 days before Remembrance Day. However, some may wait until after Halloween and Bonfire Night festivities before pinning them.

How to wear a Remembrance Day poppy?

There is ongoing debate about which side to pin your poppy badge. Many argue that it should be worn on the left side, close to the heart, where members of the armed forces also wear their medals. Nonetheless, the Royal British Legion states that there is no “correct way” to wear a poppy if you’re not in the military. They emphasize that it’s a matter of personal choice and simply ask that if you choose to wear a poppy, you do so with pride.

Why do people wear poppies?

Poppies are a tribute to World War I. During the war, the battle-ravaged fields of France and Belgium were left barren. In 1915, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote about poppies in his famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” When the war concluded and the land began to recover, red poppies were among the first plants to reappear. Consequently, red poppies became synonymous with the war and the sacrifices made by courageous soldiers. The RBL explains that the American War Secretary, Moina Michael, then purchased poppies to raise funds for those in need following the war.

This symbolic emblem ‘Red Poppy’ was subsequently adopted by the Royal British Legion in 1921 when they launched their first Poppy Appeal.

However, the true highlight of the event was the Lloyds of London tour, expertly guided by Mark Crisp, Tiku Patel, and Colin Reid. This unique experience provided our guests with a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most prestigious insurance markets in the world. We hope that everyone who had the privilege of participating in the tour found it to be an eye-opening and educational experience.

MacMillan Cancer Support has had a profound impact on the lives of those affected by cancer, and this event was our way of supporting their remarkable efforts. Every contribution made a significant difference in enabling MacMillan to continue their vital work.

We are delighted to announce that we exceeded our office donations target, raising an impressive £389 and counting! A heartfelt Thank You to all our team members who participated by either offering delicious treats or making contributions!

What an amazing turnout at the Rain Bar in Manchester, during the Biba Conference 2023!

We had so many guests attending, both familiar faces and new, joining us for an unforgettable afternoon. Thank you to all of you who attended for making it an event to cherish! 💙

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the incredible community we witnessed forming within the walls of the Rain Bar. Laughter filled the air as conversations flowed freely. It was heart-warming to see so many people coming together and enjoying each other’s company.

We want to extend our big thanks to all the Rain Bar staff who were amazing throughout and made sure our event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone there.

Andrew Walsh is named Chief Executive Officer of Citynet

Citynet Insurance Brokers, a leading wholesale Lloyd’s broker in the UK, has promoted Andrew Walsh to the role of Chief Executive Officer. His role which has been approved by the FCA is focused on specialty difficult risks in Lloyds and London Market insurers.

Andrew brings a significant amount of experience to his role, having held a number of senior positions in his career spanning over 25 years, all of which have been gained while working within Lloyds and London Market.

His career with Citynet started in 2011 to head up the Motor Fleet Department, progressing rapidly while gaining a track record in delivering against ambitious growth, sales, and service ambitions. In 2014 Andy was appointed to the Board of Directors and three years later he took on the role of Managing Director ahead of the acquisition of Citynet by PIB Group.

Andrew’s appointment is one of a series of executive moves at PIB Group whose growth is set to accelerate in 2022 and beyond, particularly across Europe. The moves aim to strengthen the Group’s corporate structure and governance as part of the next phase in its evolution in building a leading pan-European commercial insurance brokerage. New brand and new home for COBRA London Markets who join forces to become known as Citynet Insurance Brokers.

Citynet Insurance Brokers are delighted to confirm that COBRA London Markets will be rebranded into Citynet as of 8^th November 2021.

Since November 2019, COBRA London Markets (COBRA LM) has joined forces with Citynet. Sharing the same office space, the two brands have become one strong team working together in anticipation of this rebranding moment. Trading for over 21 years, Citynet has a long legacy and a strong reputation in the London Market.

Joining forces with COBRA LM, which has an equally impressive and lengthy legacy, is a natural next step in their evolution to unify the brands under one name. The move will see the Citynet brand becoming a powerhouse in the London Market and providing all its broker partners with an invaluable customer service and an even broader range of products and services.

Over the past two years, some of the COBRA LM and Citynet departments had already merged internally to create a stronger offering. The rebrand will unify as one company under the leadership of Andrew Walsh.

By joining our forces, Citynet is making sure that its broker partners will be the first to benefit, by having even wider access to Lloyd’s and London Markets and expert advice from its employees that have been trading into the market for decades.

“I am very proud of the heritage provided by COBRA London Markets and I’m equally excited about the future, by presenting our proposition to the market under a single brand,” said Andrew Walsh.

The rebranding will be effective from 8^th November 2021 for New Business and Renewals issued after that date. For policies which are mid-term, rebranding will take place at renewal, rather than as part of any mid-term adjustment, to minimise disruption for policyholders.

There is no action required on behalf of brokers or policyholders.

While the same team of experts will remain, they will be moving office! The COBRA LM rebranding will coincide with Citynet’s office move.
